Meeting Richard Dreyfuss
I had a chance to meet yesterday with Richard Dreyfuss. As noted in a previous post here, this accomplished actor is now turning much of his energy and talent to civic education.
When some celebrities adopt a cause, they seem to just have a cursory understanding of the issue and are focused on the photo op. But after spending the better part of the afternoon listening to Richard's ideas about a compelling new civics curriculum, I can tell you that his commitment to this is for real! He is a very well-read student of history and brings a lot of substance to the issue.
Martha's Vineyard is serving a pilot site for Dreyfuss' curriculum, so Mass. is likely to feature prominently in the effort. Stay tuned to massyouth.org for more info and ways you can get involved!
Oh yes, most Massyouth users weren't born yet, but the Martha's Vineyard connection stems from it being the location of Jaws, one of Dreysfuss' first big roles (and a movie that kept me out of the ocean for at least a year as a kid!).
